Audemars Piguet is expanding its iconic model family, Royal Oak, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, with brand new versions. The first model we focus on is the Jumbo Extra-Thin, which has undergone the most important updates since its introduction in 1972.
The new model comes in a stainless steel case with a diameter of 39mm and a height of 8.1mm. Sharing the same diameter as the original model, the case has sapphire crystals on both sides. The case, which is designed to withstand 50m of water pressure, sports the octagonal bezel with 8 screws, which is among the symbol details of the model family.
The renewed Jumbo also hosts a Petite Tapisserie patterned dial. Finished in the color code “Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50”, the blue dial features applique indices made of white gold and a “bathtub” type hour/minute hands. The date window is located at 3 o'clock on the dial, where the AP logo is positioned at 6 o'clock. Let's add that these two features distinguish the Jumbo models from other versions at first glance.
A brand new movement powers the new model. Taking over the flag exactly 40 years after the JLC-based Caliber 2121, Caliber 7121 includes many important updates. Let's talk about them briefly; The power reserve increases from 40 hours to 55 hours. The operating frequency of 19800vph is updated to 28800vph, a value that sets the modern standard. The most important innovation of the movement, which also includes technological solutions such as ball-bearing mounted rotor and balance wheel with direct inertia blocks, is the addition of the quick date change feature. In this way, so to speak, the 40-year pain of setting the date is over.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin 16202ST comes with an integrated steel bracelet that is secured to the wrist with a folding clasp with the AP logo. The list price for the model added to the catalogs with the product code Reference:16202ST.OO.1240ST.01 is (if you can find it) EUR 32,400.
The renewed Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin collection also includes the 16202OR with a rose gold case and a smoked gray dial, the 16202BA with a yellow gold case and a smoked gold dial, and the 16202PT with a platinum case and a smoked green dial.
Although no one doubts that AP will give due importance to the 50th anniversary of the Royal Oak legend, we honestly did not expect such a comprehensive collection. Jumbo, which is the most impatiently waited among the novelties, seems to continue to be one of the most sought-after models in its segment with its updates as important as its similarity to the original model.
