Chopard L.U.C Grand Strike

The Grande Sonnerie complication represents the very apex of horological artistry, demanding hundreds of components to interact in perfect, simultaneous harmony. After a dedicated thirty-year journey developing the L.U.C collection, Chopard is now firmly establishing its position in this exclusive club with the magnificent L.U.C Grand Strike. This timepiece is not merely a Grande Sonnerie; it is elegantly integrating a Petite Sonnerie, a Minute Repeater, and a tourbillon regulator within a single, sophisticated case. Chopard is continuously pushing the boundaries of technical watchmaking with this ambitious creation.

The acoustic excellence of the L.U.C Grand Strike is stemming from the brand's patented sapphire monobloc technology. This revolutionary system is involving the gongs and the watch crystal being machined as one single unit of synthetic sapphire. This monolithic construction is ensuring that the sound is being channeled directly to the exterior of the watch, maximizing volume and clarity by preventing energy dissipation through the movement or case material. Furthermore, the gongs are featuring an orthogonal (square) cross-section, which is constantly enriching the sound with deep, layered harmonics. This innovation, previously celebrated when the Full Strike Minute Repeater won the Aiguille d'Or in 2017, is now reaching new heights in the Grand Strike.

The case is being crafted from relatively compact 43mm ethical white gold in a bassinée style, adhering to the new L.U.C aesthetic codes introduced earlier this year. This design language is featuring a curved bezel, welded lugs, and a fluted crown which is continually promoting a sense of timeless elegance. The crown is incorporating a coaxial pusher for the minute repeater and a sliding selector switch for the chiming modes. This selector is allowing the wearer to effortlessly switch between Grande Sonnerie (G), Petite Sonnerie (P), and Silence (S) modes. The minute repeater function is being activated on demand via the pusher integrated into the crown.

Calibre L.U.C 08.03-L is currently showcasing a technical tour de force, comprising 686 parts and 67 jewels. This manufacture movement required over 11,000 hours of Research & Development and is integrating ten proprietary technical patents, five of which are newly developed for this timepiece. The strike work mechanism is prominently displayed on the dial side, featuring the polished steel hammers at 10 o'clock and its governor at 8 o'clock. This governor, equipped with twin springs, is effectively regulating the chime speed and is continuously minimizing background noise to produce a pure, clean sound.

The calibre is utilizing two separate mainspring barrels. One barrel is dedicating its power to the time indication and is providing a generous 70 hours of power reserve. A second, dedicated barrel is supplying the strike work mechanism, delivering up to 12 hours of power in the demanding Grande Sonnerie mode. Both barrels are being wound in different directions using the crown, a thoughtful design choice that is constantly ensuring the optimal performance of both the timekeeping and the chiming functions.

The precision of the L.U.C 08.03-L is being affirmed by both the COSC chronometer certification and the prestigious Poinçon de Genève quality hallmark. This dual certification is confirming that the movement is meeting the highest standards of accuracy, finish, and reliability. The calibre is built with a mainplate and bridges made from German silver (maillechort), which are being adorned with exquisite Côtes de Genève stripes. The tourbillon bridge is meticulously crafted from mirror-polished stainless steel, a dazzling detail that is continually reflecting the exceptional skill of the Chopard artisans.

The one-minute tourbillon regulator is beating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and is featuring a rare, yet highly practical, stop-seconds mechanism. This function is allowing for precise time-setting by momentarily halting the tourbillon cage. A series of newly patented security mechanisms is continuously safeguarding the complex movement from improper handling. For instance, the mode selector can be switched during a chime without risk, and a brake switch is preventing the activation of a strike when the dedicated power reserve is exhausted, thereby eliminating the possibility of an incomplete or partial chime. The Chopard L.U.C Grand Strike is currently redefining expectations for Grande Sonnerie watches, standing as a monumental achievement in contemporary high-end watchmaking.
