Cutting Edge Technology Meets Nostalgia
Let’s travel back to the 1960s, when a groundbreaking watch was introduced. With 99.9977% accuracy, a smooth gliding seconds hand, and the ability to run on a power cell for a full year, the Bulova Accutron Spaceview was revolutionary. Initially designed as a “demonstrator” model for salesmen, its open dial and visible movement fascinated the public, making it one of the most iconic timepieces of the era. By the late 1970s, however, quartz movements overshadowed the Accutron’s tuning fork technology.
Fast forward to 2020, and Bulova, under Citizen’s ownership, has reimagined this classic with the Accutron DNA. This watch pays homage to the Spaceview while embracing modern technology with a completely new electrostatic movement. The Accutron DNA is a bold, futuristic watch that stands on its own merits.
The Accutron DNA is undeniably large, with a 45.1mm case diameter, a lug-to-lug measurement of 50mm, and a thickness of 15.6mm. Its size is emphasized by the domed crystal, which accounts for almost a third of its thickness. The case is a blend of various metals, with a unique construction that includes multiple pieces. The strap is integrated into the design, attaching via small screws to a curved metal surface that replaces traditional lugs.
From the side, the case’s thickness is apparent, and the large domed crystal is impossible to ignore. Below the crystal, the mid-case features vertical brushing, while the stepped case back combines brushed and polished finishes. The small, push-down crown at 3 o’clock is adorned with the Accutron logo.
The case back is decorated with the Accutron logo at its center, surrounded by a turbine-style electrostatic motor design. The case’s substantial size is necessary to accommodate the NS30 electrostatic movement, which is visible through the open dial.
The dial is where the Accutron DNA truly shines. It features a green hour and minute track around the outer edge, reminiscent of the original Spaceview. The electrostatic turbine generators at 5 and 7 o’clock spring into motion with the slightest wrist movement, powering the watch.
The electrostatic movement is the star of the show. It harnesses kinetic energy from a rotor, which spins two small generators. These generators produce static electricity, stored in a capacitor, which powers the quartz timekeeping module and the motors driving the hands. The movement is mesmerizing, with the seconds hand springing to life after a few arm swings, driven by a larger electrostatic motor at 10 o’clock.
On the wrist, the Accutron DNA is a beast Despite its size, the watch is relatively light at 128 grams, thanks to the balance between the case and strap. The strap and clasp are well-made, but the integrated design means strap changes are not an option. Accutron currently doesn’t offer alternative straps, but this could change in the future.
In conclusion, the Accutron DNA retains the spirit of the original 1960s model while introducing a new and exciting electrostatic movement. The watch’s futuristic design and dynamic dial make it a standout piece. The Accutron DNA is a bold statement in modern watchmaking, honoring its heritage while pushing the boundaries of technology.
