Alluring, golden and warm... In 2024, Piaget is celebrating its 150th anniversary with a gold-letter day, unveiling the new face of Piaget boutique in Istanbul. This is back to basics for a Maison that, in 1959, turned 40 rue du Rhône in Geneva into a unique oasis, then called Salon Piaget, where people took the time to talk, share and create connections while admiring the detail of gold work or the beauty of a watch dial set with diamonds. There, each visitor could also shape and personalise the contours of their favourite watch at will, thanks to the Maison’s ‘Style Selector’. This attention to detail echoes the words of Yves Piaget, which still resonate today: “My friends become my clients and my clients become my friends”.
Jewellers in the watch industry since 1874, Piaget is going back to its roots with the sensational material that electrifies its creative universe: molten gold, light that turns into matter. Worked in all its forms, carved by hand by the Maison’s master craftspeople into different textures, including the signature Palace Decor engraving, gold is irresistible, tactile, desirable and versatile, with many different faces. This unique savoir-faire, a true symbol of the Maison, is now reflected in the signature look of this alluring new concept designed by Rafael de Càrdenas, a New York based architect, designer and founder of his studio Rafael de Càrdenas, Ltd. From textures to colours, from shapes to details, Rafael de Càrdenas ignites this energy and radiance at the heart of Piaget, the Maison of Extraleganza.
Far from being merely a simple shining band, its façade subtly alternates forms and spaces between its golden monoliths and its glass windows, like a chain-link bracelet of a watch that constantly reveals fascinating new details. It is all about contrast. Unexpected meetings between materials, colors and stories that define a more intricate landscape. The first significant detail that visitors see when they step through the door is a mural in shades of green, blue and gold. The fresco, paying homage to the natural play of textures, colors and ornamental stones that are the real stars of Piaget’s world. This can be found in the reception room as well as in the VIP room, hidden to guarantee an intimate experience.
Another high point is the cabinet of curiosities, or rather virtuosity, where time seems to stand still while one examines the treasures of the natural world, books and other varied objects that each have something to say about the world of Piaget. In every corner, even on the ceiling painted by the artist Julien Gautier, the air is almost mineral, charged with the raw and vibrant energy contained in the shards of malachite, opal or turquoise that never cease to inspire the Maison’s gemmologists.
Always do better than necessary," as George-Edouard Piaget used to say. That's why, over its 150-year history, Piaget has cultivated numerous distinctive patterns and developed a multitude of savoir-faire. The new boutique concept pays homage to this historical expertise through various decorative elements. Among these, the three wall patterns and the ceiling pattern stand out as the most striking, visually impactful, and representative of the maison's rich history. As well as homage to Turkish art and artistry. Revealing Turkish artist Mithat Şer’s art piece comissioned for Piaget’s Istanbul boutique, the art piece ‘İsrif’.
With “İstif,” Mithat Şen reconstructs the “body” that he created and evolved in his early works. In this new series, Mithat Şen approaches this body, which he depicts at times as a whole and at times in part on the canvas or on leather mounted on the frame, from the compositional principles of calligraphy. Insofar as istif is concerned—istif being a term that denotes a calligraphic composition where the letters are superimposed and interlaced—the usual order of the letters is disturbed and the letters are re-organized and stacked into a composition on the basis of the piece- whole and volume-space relationship between the letters. “İstif” not only offers variations of form, but also builds a unique system in that it points to the different phases that units go through as they attain unity. In the “İstif ” series, the 13 units that Mithat Şen employs are encoded as an alphabet of the body, and the transformation of these units into a whole through the delicate balance of the arrangement of the letters generates new forms that offer an infinite number of interpretations—just like they do in nature. On the Stellar System, it represents the communication and interaction of both the parts with the parts and the parts with the whole in the universe, perpetually without space and time.
Rich yet utterly harmonious, this artistic whole subtly reflects the curves of the Maison’s iconic pieces, the abundance of its watchmaking tradition that began to incorporate jewellery, and the uniqueness of its DNA, which has been constantly expanding, from La Côte-aux-Fées to the rest of the world, for 150 years. With flamboyant harmony poised between elegance and extravagance, the apt title “Maison of Extraleganza” takes on its full meaning, right down to the randomly shaped detailing on the windows, where the Maison’s watches and jewellery creations also shine. These rare pieces are perfectly enhanced by Piaget architects.
