Min. ReadThe Longines Ultra-Chron, a pioneering high-frequency diver’s watch first introduced in 1968, takes a bold step forward with a carbon fiber case. This latest release blends advanced materials with the Ultra-Chron’s iconic heritage.
In 1968, Longines made history with the Ultra-Chron ref. 7970, the world’s first high-frequency dive watch, powered by the 5Hz Calibre 431. Designed for precision, the watch boasted an accuracy of one minute per month and a 200m water resistance. Revived in 2022 with modern updates, the Ultra-Chron now ventures into darker waters with a 43mm cushion-shaped carbon fiber case.
The new case is crafted from unidirectional carbon fiber and epoxy resin, creating a unique pattern for each watch. This process also ensures remarkable durability and a lightweight design, with the entire watch weighing just 80g, including the strap. Complementing the dark carbon aesthetic, the fixed titanium bezel features a matte black aluminum insert with silver numerals, although it lacks the functionality of a rotating dive bezel.
The anthracite sandblasted dial retains the Ultra-Chron’s retro flair. Applied rectangular indices with Super-LumiNova strips, grey PVD-coated hands, and the vintage Ultra-Chron logo above 6 o’clock enhance the watch's design. The dial is topped with a box-shaped sapphire crystal, ensuring durability and clarity.
At the heart of the Ultra-Chron Carbon is the Calibre L836.6, based on a modified ETA movement. Operating at 5Hz, it features an anti-magnetic silicon balance spring and offers a 52-hour power reserve. Certified as a chronometer under ISO 3159 standards by TimeLab, the movement underscores Longines' commitment to precision.
The Ultra-Chron Carbon is water-resistant to 300m and comes with a black technical fabric strap and a titanium buckle, offering both functionality and comfort.
