Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222 Steel

Vacheron Constantin Revives the Legendary 222 in Steel – A Perfect Blend of Vintage Charm and Modern Craftsmanship!

First introduced in 1977 to celebrate Vacheron Constantin’s 222nd anniversary, the 222 was the brand’s response to the rising demand for luxury sports watches with integrated bracelets. A part of the "Holy Trinity" alongside the Royal Oak and Nautilus, the 222 was designed by Jorg Hysek, not Gérald Genta, and laid the foundation for Vacheron Constantin’s modern Overseas collection. Initially released in steel, gold, and bi-metal versions, the 222 was revived in 2022 as a solid gold re-edition. Now, the long-awaited steel version has finally arrived.

In the 1970s, luxury sports watches became a groundbreaking concept. Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak (1972) pioneered the genre, followed by other icons such as Patek Philippe’s Nautilus (1976) and Vacheron Constantin’s 222 (1977). Designed by Hysek, the original 222 featured a barrel-shaped case, an integrated bracelet, and an ultra-thin automatic calibre VC1120 based on Jaeger-LeCoultre's movement. With a water resistance of 120m and a thickness of just 7mm, the steel "Jumbo" version measured 37mm in diameter and embodied a blend of elegance and practicality.

In 2022, Vacheron Constantin introduced a faithful re-edition of the 222, crafted entirely in gold. While nearly identical in design to the original, the re-edition incorporated modern updates like improved ergonomics and movement advancements. Despite its appeal, enthusiasts eagerly awaited a steel version, which has now been unveiled.

The new Historiques 222 in stainless steel stays true to the design ethos of the 1977 original while benefiting from modern enhancements. The case retains its signature barrel shape, measures 37mm in diameter, and is slightly thicker at 7.95mm due to the inclusion of a sapphire caseback. However, water resistance has been reduced to 50m, a slight drawback compared to the original’s 120m.

The integrated stainless steel bracelet has been redesigned for improved comfort and flexibility. Hidden pins and a concealed butterfly clasp ensure a seamless aesthetic, although micro-adjustment is absent. The iconic notched bezel, vertical brushing on the case, and polished accents remain, showcasing Vacheron Constantin’s attention to detail.

The blue dial, a nod to the original steel 222, features baton hands and hour markers in gold with luminous strips. The date window, repositioned for balance, no longer interferes with the minute track. The applied Maltese Cross at 5 o’clock is rendered in yellow gold, adding a subtle touch of contrast.

Beneath the sapphire caseback lies the in-house calibre 2455/2, a robust update to the original JLC-based movement. Certified by the Hallmark of Geneva, the calibre operates at 4Hz, offers a 40-hour power reserve, and features a quick-set date. The gold rotor engraved with “222” adds a luxurious finishing touch.

Unveiled as part of Vacheron Constantin’s 270th-anniversary celebrations, the Historiques 222 in steel is a permanent addition to the collection. Exclusively available through Vacheron Constantin boutiques, the watch is priced at EUR 35,000, making it a more accessible option compared to the gold version (EUR 80,500).
