Omega, one of the first names that comes to mind when it gets to Regatta Timer function timepieces, is the guest of our Hands On corner with the Omega Speedmaster X-33 Regatta which is one of the rare analog/digital combo display models in the brand’s current product line.
Omega, who gained attention with its support for the Emirates Teams New Zealand (ETNZ) during the 35th Annual America’s Cup Sailing Race organization, included details that refer to this sponsorship in the Speedmaster X-33 Regatta model.
The model, which was worn by the ETNZ team members during the race, is offered in a Grade 2 lightweight titanium alloy. Measuring 45mm in diameter and 15.10mm in height, the case is equipped with an AR coated scratch resistant sapphire crystal on the front side and a solid titanium caseback with an embossed ETNZ logo on the rear side. The bezel is made of titanium as well featuring a black ceramic insert with star figures. An interesting detail about the model’s case is its water resistance rating. Despite its obvious extreme water sports use, the case is water resistant only to 30 meters which is far weaker than what we have expected.
The dial of the model also features details that tribute to the ETNZ sponsorship and New Zealand Flag. The matt black surface houses three different digital displays and a set of analog hands that are finished in black, white and red. The chapter ring around the digital UTC display and the inner flange are finished in blue.
Designed via the modern X-33 platform, the model is powered by the Omega Caliber Ref. 5620. The movement is exclusively designed to have the required features and warnings during a sailing race. Those features, supported by a highly audible alarm sound, are read by three different digital displays and a set of center mounted hands.
The model comes on a black textile strap with blue stitching and blue rubber lining. The strap, which is both comfortable to wear and durable to use within water, is secured by an Omega signed folding clasp made of Titanium.
Of course, it is not easy to recommend a timepiece with such specific features like Regatta Timing. If you are actively involved in sailing or if simply enjoy analog / digital combined watches and you find Breitling Emergency too professional and Casio G-Shock very common, the Omega Speedmaster X-33 Regatta is likely to be the perfect watch for you.
