In addition to the new model designed for the 50th anniversary of the Sea-Dweller model family and the solid gold Daytona models with Oysterflex bracelets, another novelty came from the Cellini Collection of Rolex.
Just as at almost every Baselworld fair, this year also Rolex was among the most anticipated brands. The brand, which attracted great attention with its special model designed for the 50th anniversary of Sea-Dweller series introduced for the first time in 1967, was also acclaimed for its solid gold Daytona models with newly added Oysterflex rubber bracelet. The 18K gold / stainless steel models included in the Sky-Dweller collection, which has only been offered for sale as solid gold since joining the Rolex model family, were also quite popular with polarized comments.
Another innovation from Rolex came up with the Cellini collection, which the brand has recently been more interested than ever before. The new model features a pointer date and a moon phase indicator.
The moon phase feature, which is one of the most visually appealing complications of traditional watchmaking, has not been in the Rolex catalogs for nearly 70 years. This feature, which was used in the Ref. 6062 and 8171 models of 1950s, has once again found its place in the Cellini collection that received perfect feedback from the watch enthusiasts with its renewed look launched in 2014.
The case of the new model is designed in the typical Oyster form. The 18K Everose case measures 39mm in diameter. The case sports a sapphire crystal on the front side and a slightly domed solid gold caseback at the rear side. The Rolex classic fluted bezel design is also used in the new Cellini Moonphase as well. However, Rolex re-designed the fluted shape in to a more elegant form to match with the model’s classic dress watch image. The model, which looks a tad bigger than 39mm thanks to its white color and thin bezel, provides a neat wrist presence.
The dial of the model is finished in white lacquer with black printing and gold accents. The dial is quite legible thanks to its contrasting color scheme and simple design. The pointer date hand is finished in blue in line with the moon phase disk.
The moon phase indicator that gave its name to the model is located at 6 o’clock position. The moon phase disk is made of grand feu enamel. In fact, it is a little “old school” for a brand like Rolex which is always one of the industry’s leading brands in adopting latest technologies as grand feu enamel dials are not 100% perfect in finish due to their nature. On the other hand, it is a very good choice as it goes with the rest of the model’s classic looks very well. The moon and star figures on the disk is finished in silver.
The moon phase feature is adjusted by the recessed pusher located at 8 o’clock position and it is accurate to a day in 122 years.
The model is powered with the Caliber Ref. 3195. Self-winding movement beats at 28800vph and offers up to 48 hours of power reserve when fully wound.
The Rolex Cellini Moonphase comes with a crocodile strap and a folding clasp made of Everose. MSRP is 25.500,00 CHF.
