Min. ReadThe allure of 1970s pop culture continues to inspire modern watchmaking, and the latest example is the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 Grendizer Special Edition. Originally born in the 1970s as the PRX, this collection was revived a few years ago, coinciding with the growing demand for luxury sports watches. The PRX series quickly gained popularity for being an affordable yet well-crafted alternative.
Now, Tissot has paired its 1970s classic with another icon from the same era—UFO Robot Grendizer, a popular Japanese manga and animated series created by Go Nagai. The show, which first aired in 1975, followed Crown Prince Duke Fleed as he escaped his home planet in the giant mecha robot, Grendizer. The series became a massive hit, particularly in France and Italy, where it was known as "Goldorak."
The 40mm stainless steel case of the PRX showcases a deep blue dial, featuring the iconic Grendizer robot's bust. During the day, the design is subtle, but under low light, a glowing yellow Super-LumiNova outline reveals the figure. The dial is accented with green Super-LumiNova on the markers and hands, enhancing visibility and contrast.
On the reverse side, the watch's Powermatic 80 movement, offering an impressive 80-hour power reserve, is visible through a sapphire case back. The rotor is adorned with another Grendizer figure and the inscription “Tissot x Grendizer.”
The PRX Grendizer retains its 40mm width, 10.9mm thickness, and 51mm lug-to-lug length. The integrated bracelet can be easily swapped with Tissot’s rubber or leather straps thanks to its quick-release system. With 100 meters of water resistance, it’s perfect for casual dips in the pool.
This special edition comes in a box adorned with imagery from the Grendizer TV show but isn’t limited in number.
