In a captivating display of centuries-old craftsmanship meeting modern horology, Ulysse Nardin continues to redefine the boundaries of high watchmaking with the Freak X Gold Enamel. First introduced in 2001, the Freak has consistently challenged conventions, particularly through its use of silicon components and its avant-garde carousel time display. In 2019, the more approachable Freak X line emerged, introducing a conventional crown while retaining the core philosophy of the original concept. It now evolves once more with the Gold Enamel model.

At the heart of the Freak X lies its most distinguishing feature: a rotating carousel mechanism that serves both as the minute hand and the movement’s upper structure. This entire assembly spins on its axis, showing time through an arrow-shaped bridge for minutes and a disc for hours. As it orbits the dial, it creates a kinetic spectacle, which continues to fascinate collectors and horology enthusiasts alike.

The Freak X Gold Enamel features a 43mm case made of rose gold and blue PVD-coated titanium. Its striking visual appeal is further enhanced by a guilloché-finished mainplate, masterfully coated in translucent blue enamel. This is not a dial in the traditional sense but rather the mainplate of the calibre itself—integrated directly into the movement architecture.

Ulysse Nardin equips this watch with its in-house calibre UN-230, which beats at 3Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour) and provides a 72-hour power reserve. It uses 214 components and includes several parts made from silicon—namely the balance wheel, escapement, balance spring, and anchor. These silicon components ensure low friction, high precision, and longevity without the need for lubrication. Nickel flyweights and micro-blades, attached to the minute bridge, contribute to stability and aerodynamics.

The hour markers are set on the fixed gear ring surrounding the carousel, while connecting components in rose gold create an elegant mechanical contrast. The watch’s technical refinement is paired with tactile luxury in the form of a blue alligator leather strap with rose gold stitching. A folding clasp in rose gold and PVD-coated titanium completes the ensemble.

It continues to attract those who appreciate horology not just as a tool for timekeeping, but as a canvas for creativity and innovation.
